The terms of the ultimatum were unreasonable, and designed to be unacceptable to Cetshwayo. British forces crossed the Thukela river at the end of December 1878. The war took place in 1879. Early in the war, the Zulus defeated the British at the Battle of Isandlwana on January 22. However, the war ended in Zulu defeat at the Battle of Ulundi on July 4.</div>
